오늘은 engineering major를 원하는 학생들을 위한 라이팅 대회 소개해 드리겠습니다.
The 2005 EngineerGirl Writing Contest
"EngineerGirl"에서 주최하는 공학 라이팅 대회입니다. EngineerGirl은 여성(women)들이 공학분야에 더 많은 관심과 활동을 하도록 장려하고 지원하는 미국의 단체입니다. 미국 국립공학아카데미인 National Academy of Engineering(NAE)가 주최하며, 매년 에세이 대회를 통해 더 많은 학생들이 공학과 관련되어 여러 사회적 문제를 탐구하고 해결하도록 주력하고 있습니다.
2025 라이팅 대회 주제
올해의 토픽은 Innovating Smarter입니다. 구체적으로는 다음의 주제를 탐구해야 합니다.
Write a piece describing a common object you would make "smart". Tell us what it wold do, how it would help people, and what could go wrong.
더 "스마트"하게 만들고 싶은 무언가(Smart objects, 가전제품, 장난감, 가구, 기술제품 등)를 선택한 후, 그것이 어떤 기능을 하고, 어떻게 사람들을 도우며, 어떤 챌린지/리스크가 있을지에 대한 에세이를 작성해야 합니다.
대회 참여 대상: Grade 3-5, Grade 6-8, Grade 9-12
9~12학년들은 약 1,200자의 에세이를 통해 다음의 질문들에 답해야 합니다.
1. Smart objects sometimes use artificial intelligence (AI) to engance their functionality. Think of an object tat could be useful with smart fuctionality and AI. Describe its purpose and how it is currently used. What would you like this object to do for you?
2. Smart objects sometimes use personal information about you. Often, they have access to this information through other accuns such as Amazon or Google. What information would your object need? where would you get it?
3. Are there any problems with using personal information? What issues may occur? Explain how you would address those issues.
4. Devices that connect to the internet will likley face attacks. Attackeers try to steal important information or stop things from working. What are at least two methods that designers of smart devices use to keep things secures? How would these methods be useful for your smart device?
5. Think about the potential risks associated with AI. Are there potential biases or other risks associated with using AI in the object you have chosen? How would you mitigate these risks and ensure that the AI in your smart object operates responsibly and ethically?
에세이 제출 데드라인: 2025년 2월 1일 11:59pm EST
에세이 심사 기준은 아래와 같습니다.
1) Presentation of Engineering (~50%)
2) Perspective sconsiered (~35%)
3) Quality of writing (~15%)
라이팅 대회이지만 글쓰기 실력은 최대 15%의 비중으로 심사를 하겠다고 밝히고 있습니다. 공학 분야와 관련되어 에세이 질문의 핵심인 object (스마트 사물)을 제대로 반영해서 그것의 목표와 기능을 잘 설명하고, 그 object이 어떻게 데이터를 사용할 것인지, 또한 다른 관련 정보들을 어디서 얻었는지 관련 리서치를 통해 구체적으로 제시해야 합니다. 허무맹랑한 아이디어는 이 부분에서 좋은 점수를 받지 못하겠죠. 근거가 있고 설득력 있는 논리가 뒷받침되어야 합니다.
